Traffic Violations

In Virginia, There Are Hidden Costs to Paying Traffic Tickets

Paying the ticket may seem like an inexpensive way to resolve charges for speeding and other traffic violations. However, the long-term consequences — the potential for higher insurance rates, loss of driving privileges and even a criminal record, if the charge is reckless driving  — can be far more costly than hiring a lawyer to defend you.

I'm Alex Levay, a criminal defense lawyer in Leesburg, Virginia. We represent clients in Loudoun, Clarke, Fairfax and Fauquier Counties in all types of traffic violation cases, including:

  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving without a license or on a suspended license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Drunk driving charges (known as DUI in Virginia)
  • Tickets in accidents cases
  • Commercial traffic violations, such as exceeding the weight limit

We are in court every day on traffic and other types of criminal cases. We understand the latest appellate court decisions with regard to the admissibility of evidence and know what objections will work in court. We have obtained dismissals, acquittals and reduced charges for clients in all types of traffic cases.

Penalties in Traffic Cases

When you pay a traffic ticket in Virginia, a finding of guilt is entered on the charge. In the case of a summons for reckless driving or driving under suspension, you are charged with a class 1 misdemeanor that may result in the loss of your driver's license or time in jail. You will also have a permanent criminal record that could affect you every time an employer, lender, police officer or someone else conducts a background check on you in the future.

Any traffic ticket that alleges a moving violation will result in points against your driver's license. If you accumulate points, you face driver's license suspension by the Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition, your auto insurance company can raise your rates or even cancel your policy based on the number of points you have.

Hiring an experienced defense attorney can make the difference between keeping your driver's license or losing it, and keeping your freedom or losing it.
